    About Lesson

Functions of Cartilage in the Trachea:

    • The cartilage rings in the trachea provide structural support to the airway, preventing it from collapsing during inhalation when the pressure inside the thoracic cavity decreases.

    • The rigid cartilage rings help to maintain the patency or openness of the trachea, ensuring that it remains open for the passage of air during both inhalation and exhalation.

    • Cartilage in the trachea acts as a protective barrier, shielding the underlying delicate tissues of the respiratory tract from external compression or trauma.

    • While the trachea needs to be rigid enough to prevent collapse, the presence of cartilage also prevents overexpansion during inhalation, maintaining the integrity of the airway.
